Custom Home Building Timelines

Designing and building a custom home doesn’t have to be daunting. With clear communication and realistic expectations, the process is quite simple once it’s looked at step by step. At Beaver Mountain, we strive to ensure that our clients have an enjoyable experience and clear picture of the entire design and build process before we even start their home build project. Here is a helpful timeline to put things into perspective. On average, we tell our clients that it typically takes 8 to 12 months for a 2000 square foot home to be completed. With that in mind, let’s dive into the steps that take us through those months so you can visualize what goes into a fully custom-crafted log or timber frame home.

An important note when talking about timelines: Our design and build process can move as quickly as you want and need it to. A typical design-to-delivery timeline is 3-4 months. We will work with you and your contractor to ensure that your home package is delivered when they are ready for it, even if it’s quicker than average.

The Design Process (4-8 weeks)

A Feasibility Conversation

Every Beaver Mountain home build project starts with a Feasibility Conversation. We’ll answer your questions, discuss your ideas for your custom-crafted wood home, learn about your family’s lifestyle, and what home features are “must haves” for you. We also review plans, lay out a process timeline, and discuss your project budget.

Site Assessment & Design Process Begins

The next step in the process is a site assessment. Every Beaver Mountain home is building site-specific, so a property visit is essential. This part of the design consultation allows our project designer to walk your property and learn about the type of features you would like incorporated into the design of your wood home. We’ll learn about your vision, and details like views, sun exposure, and slope of the property are factored into the design of your home.  By taking this extra step at the very beginning of the process, we can ensure that your home will be 100% customized to the property site where it will be located and consider your own personal lifestyle so your finished home is as unique as you are.

Conceptual Drawings + Turnkey Estimates

Once a site assessment has been completed, our team of experts will create 3D conceptual drawings of your future home. Or, if you have plans from an architect, we’ll work from those. After your home’s conceptual drawings are reviewed and any changes have been incorporated into the design, we provide initial turnkey move-in estimates. Conceptual drawings are further refined, materials for the project are selected, budget estimates are solidified based on your material choices, and the overall scope of the project is finalized. From here, we will assist you with the next step of the process: selecting a contractor.

Contractor Selection & Bid Analysis

Finding a trusted independent contractor for a home build project can feel overwhelming when going at it alone. However, Beaver Mountain clients never have to go through this stage of the process by themselves. Our team of experts is here to guide you through the process and assist you in locating, recruiting, and coordinating initial contractor interviews. Once bids are in, we’ll help you analyze proposals, develop a project summary, and assist you in communicating timelines with your contractor so everyone is on the same page before the project begins.

The Ordering & Manufacturing Process (6-12 weeks)

Ordering & Crafting Your Home

Once a contractor is selected, it’s time to order the materials needed to build your one-of-a-kind home. Construction drawings are created and used to determine the materials needed and to secure building permits From here, you’re well on your way to stepping inside the log or timber frame home of your dreams.

Site Preparation & Foundation Work Begins

Before a home can be built, your site must be prepped so foundation work can begin. First, the site will be cleared and excavated. Then, a driveway and your home’s foundation will start to take shape.

Production Begins

Our skilled craftsmen will start to create your home, precutting and numbering the logs if you chose a solid log package and creating the pre-framed wall sections, trusses, timber-framed second floor, and timbers. Our homes are not mass-produced or cut by a computer; they are crafted one at a time using traditional home-building methods. The finished manufactured materials will be wrapped and stored under cover until delivery day.

Delivery & Construction (6-10 months)

Delivery

We offer flexible delivery schedules, so when your contractor is ready, we’ll deliver your materials to your site, and construction of the home will begin. Beaver Mountain materials are tarped and secured on the delivery truck. They are then delivered, unloaded, and staged for construction.

Customer Services & Technical Support

Experienced log/time construction personnel will promptly respond to assess building questions and concerns. Our field technician will schedule technical assistance with your contractor (if needed).

Delivery of Interior Materials

Once the shell is weather-tight, our team will deliver interior materials, and interior work will progress.
