Laughing Place is a completed custom log home in the Catskills, designed for Fred and Johnna as a personal retreat high on a bluff overlooking the Delaware River region. What began as a plan to renovate an old farmhouse became something much more meaningful when their local builder encouraged them to look beyond the existing structure and build where the land offered its greatest gift: long, open views across the valley.
After visiting the Beaver Mountain Design Center, Fred and Johnna worked closely with Senior Design Consultant John Lanner to create a one-of-a-kind home shaped around the land, their lifestyle, and the way they wanted to welcome family and friends. The result is a warm, deeply personal Catskills log home filled with natural light, handcrafted details, and spaces designed for gathering, storytelling, and quiet retreat.
Large prow windows face the valley, framing panoramic views of rolling hills and changing seasons. Inside, the open-concept living area brings together rich wood tones, natural textures, and a dramatic fireplace that anchors the home through the colder months. An open staircase and thoughtfully placed windows support natural ventilation in warmer weather, helping the home feel comfortable across the seasons.
Every part of Laughing Place reflects its owners. The kitchen centers around a La Cornue stove and rolling butcher block island, creating a natural place for cooking, serving, and spending time together. The library and dining area offer quieter moments toward the rear of the home, while the furnishings, folk art, Mackenzie-Childs accents, and collected pieces from a life of travel give the home a layered, personal character.
During the holidays, Laughing Place becomes even more nostalgic, with Fred’s vintage train set, old-fashioned Christmas details, and rooms filled with warmth.
