When Fred and Johnna purchased a property nestled high on a bluff in the Catskills, their plan was to remodel the old farmhouse that sat in the hollow. But when local builder Max Dutcher—who had worked with their son—visited the site, he offered them a different vision. Instead of putting time and money into a drafty old structure, Max handed them a brochure from Beaver Mountain Log & Cedar Homes and simply said, “Build on the bluff, and you can see for fifty miles.”
That suggestion changed everything.
After touring the Beaver Mountain Design Center and connecting with our team, Fred and Johnna knew they’d found the right partner to bring their dream to life. Working closely with Senior Design Consultant John Lanner, they created a one-of-a-kind Catskills log home, custom-designed to celebrate natural views, welcome family and friends, and showcase their love of travel, storytelling, and heritage.
Built on the site of the original farmhouse, “Laughing Place” is both a retreat and a reflection. Large prow windows face out over the valley, offering panoramic views of rolling hills and changing seasons. The open-concept living space was designed for easy entertaining, with rich wood tones, natural light, and warm textures throughout. The open staircase and thoughtfully placed windows allow for natural ventilation during summer months, while the massive fireplace—featuring a personalized stone “keystone”—keeps the home cozy in winter. The fireplace itself was handcrafted with custom air return features for year-round comfort.
Every corner of the home tells a story. The library and dining area are placed at the rear of the house for quiet moments and intimate meals. The heart of the home is the kitchen, centered around a La Cornue stove and a rolling butcher block island for prepping and serving. Together, Fred and Johnna often cook meals here for visiting friends and family. The furnishings are an eclectic mix of artisan pieces and meaningful mementos collected over a lifetime. From Mackenzie-Childs accents made in Upstate New York to folk art and furniture gathered during their years living and working across the country, the space is full of personal charm.
In December, the home transforms into a nostalgic wonderland. Fred sets up a vintage train set around the tree, and the rooms are filled with old-fashioned Christmas cheer. But it’s not just the holidays that bring warmth—this home was built for all seasons. Whether enjoying honey from Fred’s own harvest or gathering for sunsets on the bluff, “Laughing Place” reflects the couple’s love for nature, community, and each other.
As a part-time residence, this custom log home in the Catskills was designed with comfort, efficiency, and meaning in mind. Fred and Johnna now spend four months a year here, surrounded by the beauty of the Delaware River region, just a short drive from towns like Hancock, Margaretville, and Roscoe, NY.
At Beaver Mountain, no two homes are alike. Like all of our handcrafted log and timber homes, the Laughing Place was designed specifically for the land, lifestyle, and legacy of its owners. If you’re dreaming of building in the Catskills or the Upper Delaware River Valley, let’s start a conversation. We’ll help you bring your own story to life—beautifully, intentionally, and one custom detail at a time.
