In February, members of our team traveled to Orlando, Florida to attend the 2026 International Builders’ Show (IBS), one of the largest gatherings of builders, architects, and manufacturers in the country.
Each year, IBS offers a clear look at where the industry is headed, from emerging building technologies to evolving design priorities. For our team, the educational sessions are always a highlight, providing insight that helps us continue refining both the homes we design and the experience we provide to our clients.
Here are a few of the key trends shaping custom homes in 2026 and beyond.

Lifestyle Planning in Home Design
One of the most noticeable shifts is the move toward “right sizing” rather than simply building larger homes.
The focus is becoming less about total square footage and more about how a home functions day to day. While expansive homes will always have their place, many homeowners are prioritizing layouts that support their lifestyle in a more intentional way.
This includes flexible spaces that can evolve over time, custom storage integrated from the outset, dedicated areas for working from home, and stronger connections between indoor and outdoor living. In many cases, it also means planning for long-term use, with layouts that comfortably support aging in place.
Off-Site Building Technologies and Efficiency

Another major theme at IBS 2026 was the continued growth of off-site building technologies.
More builders are incorporating engineered systems and preplanned components to improve consistency and reduce delays during construction. Off-site wall panel systems, including our own preframed wall panels with integrated ZIP systems, are a key part of that shift.
By moving a portion of the framing process into a controlled environment, we are able to improve dimensional accuracy, reduce exposure to weather during construction, and create a more efficient path from foundation to enclosure.
For our clients, this results in better coordination, fewer unexpected challenges, and a smoother overall building experience.
A More Refined Approach to Luxury
Another clear trend is the continued evolution of what luxury means in custom home design.
Rather than being defined by size alone, luxury is becoming more refined, intentional, and understated. It is expressed through the integration of high-performance appliances, natural materials selected for both beauty and longevity, and a consistent level of detail carried throughout the home.
Custom fixtures, statement stone, and thoughtfully designed metalwork are becoming more prominent, but always in a way that feels cohesive. The result is a home that feels elevated, yet comfortable and livable.

Integrated Smart Home Technology
Smart home technology is no longer considered an upgrade. It is becoming an expected part of the overall design.
What stood out this year is the move toward full integration. Lighting, security, audio, and climate systems are being designed to work together seamlessly, rather than as separate elements.
For homeowners, this creates a more intuitive living experience while also supporting energy efficiency through advanced HVAC systems, integrated controls, and real-time monitoring.
Sustainability as a Standard
Sustainability continues to be a major focus, but in a more practical, performance-driven way.
Clients are expecting homes to be designed with strong building envelopes, effective moisture management, and materials that are durable and appropriate for the climate. These are no longer considered upgrades, but essential components of a well-built home.
This was particularly meaningful for us to see, as it aligns with the way we have approached design and construction from the beginning, with an emphasis on long-term performance and lasting value.
Looking Ahead
The International Builders’ Show reinforced that the direction we have been moving is closely aligned with where the industry is headed.
Site-specific design, integrated technology, sustainable building practices, and high-performance construction are all central to the homes we design and build. By continuing to invest in education and industry insight, we can refine our approach and better serve our clients at every stage.
Our goal remains the same: to thoughtfully design and build homes that not only meet expectations but also meaningfully enhance the way our clients live.
