Beaver Mountain Log Home Articles:

Where the Heart Is
The Levines add a second Beaver Mountain log home to their Catskill Mountain retreat

Ask any log home owner or future builder what attracted them to a log home and you're sure to find one answer common to them all: the wood. Its natural beauty, its “back to nature” feel, and its wonderful, unmistakable scent are naturally built into every log home, and are characteristics not typically found in today's “traditional” stick-built homes.

As we've shown in past issues of our newsletter, Naturally Home, not all wood is created equal. And although there are many differences among the many varieties of wood, there is one feature present in all woods: the “heartwood.”

The term “heartwood” seems to be the current buzzword in the log home industry today. We are constantly asked if our logs contain heartwood. Let us assure you, the answer is a resounding “YES!” In fact, Beaver Mountain's logs are milled primarily of heartwood.

It's important not to confuse the heartwood with the pith of a tree. The pith is the “bulls eye” center of a tree, consisting of soft, original tissue, from when the tree was just a sapling. It is not necessary to have the pith in every log that goes into building a log home.

All species of trees contain heartwood, yet each contains a varying degree of heartwood. For example, Northeastern White Pine and Western Red Cedar—the two wood varieties Beaver Mountain offers—both have a large amount of heartwood in each log. It is possible to get more than one log from the diameter of a tree—each primarily containing heartwood—without the presence of pith in each log.

While most logs are likely to contain heartwood, it is the percentage of heartwood in the logs that makes the critical difference in the quality of logs used to build your log home. Beaver Mountain's logs are milled primarily of heartwood. Therefore, our logs tend to be more durable, more moisture resistant, and less susceptible to rot and insect infestation.
